Discover Dinosaurs at River Legacy!

Come check out a new exhibit at the Living Science Center Exhibit Hall that opens Tuesday, Nov. 3, featuring some of the rare fossil finds from the Arlington Archosaur Site, an excavation near River Legacy Parks where fossilized bones of dinosaurs and crocodiles have been discovered. The exhibit and corresponding exploration stations in the Living Science Center's multipurpose room run through Dec. 19.

On  Saturday, Nov. 14, paleontologist Derek Main and local fossil collector Art Sahlstein will be discussing their unique discoveries from the Arlington Archosaur Site at River Legacy Living Science Center. Mature audiences can come at noon for a brown bag lunch lecture with Derek Main, Arlington Archosaur dig leader. Art Sahlstein, one of the founders of the site, will give a child-friendly presentation at 2 pm. Seating is limited, so you must RSVP to 817.860.6752 by Nov. 13 if you want to attend either session.

A Rare Texas Find

Looking for a good scavenger hunt? Now is the time to begin searching the River Legacy trails for the rare Devil's Cigar. This unusual fungus, only found in Texas and Japan, is just now emerging along the stumps of cedar elm trees, and will begin bloomng sometime in November and December. Devil's Cigar gets its name from the hissing sound it seems to make when releasing its spores. Pretty cool. Even Japanese researchers have come to River Legacy to study our rare fungus! After Dark in the Park, Friday - Sunday!

Join us for an evening of fun for the whole family at the 13th annual After Dark in the Park this weekend, featuring storytelling under the stars, live raptor and animal programs, starlight stroll, bounce house, karaoke, pumpkin patch, face painting, balloon artists, and a unique children's area with a variety of crafts and games!

Park in River Legacy Parks, 701 NW Green Oaks Boulevard, and catch a hayride shuttle to event entrance. Admission is $6 (concessions and some activities are additional). Children 2 and under are admitted free.

Be one of the first 150 children to arrive each night and receive a free goody bag! Hours are 6 to 10 pm, Friday, October 9; 5 to 10 pm, Saturday, October 10; & 5 to 9 pm, Sunday, October 11.

Our invitation only event for agencies serving disabled children and their families on Thursday, October 8 has been canceled due to the weather, but families who received tickets may use those tickets any of the other three nights.

The only thing scary is the thought of missing it!

Recruiting Young Nature Explorers

River Legacy Living Science Center is recruiting young Nature Explorers for a new after school program for children in grades kindergarten, first and second. Nature Explorers meets from 4:15 to 6:15 pm one Tuesday per month at the Science Center and includes classroom activities on selected topics, outdoor exploration and snack.

The first class begins Tuesday, October 13 and will explore the different kinds of trees growing in River Legacy Parks. Cost is $20 for each class or $105 for the 6-session series. River Legacy Volunteers Honored

 

 Maxine Delzer, Dennis Hill and Hester Schwarzer were recently recognized at the Volunteer Center of North Texas' Lone Star Breakfast held this month to honor outstanding volunteers who serve Tarrant County's nonprofit organizations. Maxine has been a River Legacy volunteer since 1996; and Dennis and Hester are two of the original volunteers who helped launch River Legacy's volunteer information desk.

Caddy Shack Scramble a Hit!

Wow! What a great day for golf Tuesday at Tierra Verde Golf Club! More than 100 golfers participated in River Legacy's 13th annual Caddy Shack Scramble and helped raise more than $30,000 for River Legacy Foundation and its education programs. Congratulations to the first place team from Rhodes Osiek & Company – Bob Neal, Jerry Wood, Thomas Bosco & Curt Osiek. River Legacy would like to to thank all of our teams for participating in the 13th annual Caddy Shack Scramble and for supporting the River Legacy Foundation.

Make a Splash with River Legacy

Enjoy a variety of FREE, fun and educational activities at Make a Splash, an interactive water science fair from 10 am to 3 pm, Saturday, September 12 at River Legacy Living Science Center. Participate in pond sampling, invertebrate investigations, fish printing, water music, a toddler's area and so much more! Creek walks are planned at 10:30 am, 12 pm and 1:30 pm. Story times featuring "Puli the Water Boy" by De Cee Cornish are set for 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1 pm, and 2 pm.

Hear presentations on "Water-Wise Plants" at 11 am and 1 pm by the North Central Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas and on the "Rainfall Simulator" at noon by the Dallas County Agrilife Extension Office.

Sign up your budding naturalist for River Legacy's Junior Naturalist Club! This afterschool program for 4th, 5th and 6th graders introduces students to a new environmental topic each session, including the use of GPS, nature photography, wildlife and wildflower identification and much more! Clubs meet on the second or third Tuesday of each month from 4:15 to 6:15 pm. Club 1 starts on September 8 and Club 2 on September 15.
