Canoe Launch progress

UPDATE: Due to construction delays, it will be about another week before the canoe launch in River Legacy Parks is completed.  Click here to check photos of the launch in progress.

The launch is located under the pedestrian bridge at the Collins Street entrance. Eventually, there will be additional launches near Greenbelt and Texas 360 to provide safe access to more than 9 miles of the Trinity River.

I have some stories too! Once on a canoe trip on the San Antonio River a friend got his foot stuck in the mud at the take-out. He stepped into the water and just sunk about eight inches into the mud. Slurp! The mud just enveloped his leg. We laughed hysterically until we realized he was seriously stuck and could not get his foot out! When we realized the gravity of the situation everyone suddenly got very quiet and gathered around to help pull his leg out of the mud, but to no avail. After ten minutes or so it hadn't budged! At that point we all started laughing again at the insanity of the situation! What else could we do?! Unbelievable! Needless to say, he finally got his foot out...and somehow managed to keep his shoe on through the whole ordeal. You know, some people pay good money for pedicure mud treatments!

I think these canoe launchs are a great idea. I've been a canoeist for 28 years and have canoed the Trinity River between Ft.Worth and Dallas. This was before any Canoe launchs and let me tell you, it was really, really hard putting-in and taking-out due to the steep and sometimes muddy banks. I have some stories. This section of the Trinity is long overdue for canoe and Kayak use. I'll leave you with this, I've never seen so many old car tires in any river in my life! River Clean-ups are very common, and I've been in too many to name here. They are very hard work, but the result is so rewarding. Count me in!
